Exploring Zanzibar: A Study Tour Experience from Fountain Gate Academy

From August 31st to September 2nd, students from Fountain Gate Academy Pre and Primary School in Tabata experienced an unforgettable trip to the enchanting Zanzibar Island. This journey offered much more than beautiful scenery; it provided an opportunity for students to learn about the rich history and vibrant culture of this remarkable destination.

Discovering Hotel Verde

Our adventure began at Hotel Verde, an impressive eco-friendly hotel that combines luxury with sustainability. The students were captivated by the hotel's commitment to environmental conservation, sparking discussions about the importance of protecting our planet. The hotel features energy-efficient lighting, rainwater collection systems, and a rigorous recycling program that minimizes waste.

For instance, Hotel Verde claims to have reduced its carbon footprint by over 30% compared to traditional hotels. The tour guide shared fascinating insights into how every detail contributes to a greener future. The experience inspired students to think critically about ways they can make a positive impact in their own communities.

Strolling Through the Streets of Stone Town

Next, we ventured into the heart of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The narrow streets, lined with intricately carved wooden doors and bustling markets, offered a vivid glimpse into the island's rich history.

During our walk, students learned about the spice trade, which has been essential to Zanzibar’s economy for centuries, contributing to about 70% of the island’s exports. They were fully engaged as they interacted with local vendors, tasting delicious street food like spicy samosas and buying unique souvenirs such as handmade crafts and vibrant fabrics.

Forodhani Park: A Taste of Local Life

Our next stop was Forodhani Park, a lively waterfront area where locals gather to enjoy the evening breeze and sample scrumptious street food. The students were thrilled to try Zanzibari delicacies such as freshly grilled seafood and the famous Zanzibar pizza, an interesting mix of flavors wrapped in dough.

The park pulsed with music and laughter, and students enjoyed watching traditional dancers perform with energy and grace. This experience allowed them to connect with the local culture in a way that textbooks simply cannot convey, enriching their understanding of community life.

Exploring Ngome Kongwe

The historical site of Ngome Kongwe, also known as the Old Fort, was our next destination. This ancient structure, built in the late 17th century, was designed as a defense against invaders. Today, it stands as a cultural center.

As students explored the fort's massive walls, they learned about its significance in Zanzibari history. They were particularly engaged by stories of battles and the resilience of the indigenous people. Such narratives highlighted the strength and determination needed to overcome adversity, leaving a lasting impression on the students.

Peace Memorial Museum and Former Slave Market

A visit to the Peace Memorial Museum and the former slave market was a poignant part of our tour. Students learned about the dark history of the slave trade in Zanzibar, which was a significant hub during the 19th century. This cultural experience emphasized the importance of remembering our past to ensure that history does not repeat itself.

The museum's exhibits offered powerful insights into the lives of those who suffered, and many students expressed their sadness and disbelief at the harsh realities of human rights violations. They left with a deeper understanding of compassion and empathy towards those who have faced such adversities.

Bayt al-Ajayeb: The Sultan's Palace

Our final stop was Bayt al-Ajayeb, the former palace of Sultan Seyyid. The palace's architecture was breathtaking, and students were left in awe of the intricate designs and rich history it presented.

As they wandered through the opulent rooms, they imagined life for the sultan and his family, discussing how leadership and culture evolve over time. This visit prompted meaningful conversations about the significance of heritage and identity, reinforcing a sense of respect for one's roots.

Reflections on an Unforgettable Journey

The study tour to Zanzibar Island was an enriching experience for the students of Fountain Gate Academy. From exploring sustainability at Hotel Verde to uncovering the historical depths of Stone Town, each moment brimming with discovery and excitement.

This journey not only broadened their horizons but also instilled a sense of responsibility towards their environment and community. As they returned home, the students carried with them memories and lessons that will last a lifetime, inspiring them to be engaged global citizens.

Exploring Zanzibar was not simply a trip; it was a transformative experience that ignited a passion for learning and adventure in every student.
